Men and weight Stigma

Understanding the hidden health impact

Weight stigma doesn’t only affect women. Many men experience discrimination, judgement, or exclusion because of their size — at work, in relationships, or even in healthcare. Yet men’s experiences are often overlooked.

At Yazen, we recognise that stigma and masculinity often collide. The pressure to “stay strong” or “handle it alone” can make it harder to ask for help. Understanding how stigma affects men is the first step towards breaking the silence and building real support.

How weight stigma affects men

Weight stigma means being treated differently because of body size. For men, it can mean being labelled lazy, less disciplined, or less capable — or being judged by appearance instead of health or skill.

This bias shows up everywhere: at the GP, in gyms, in workplaces, and on dating apps. Over time, it can take a toll on both body and mind, leading to:

  • Lower confidence and motivation
  • Anxiety about being seen exercising or eating
  • Emotional eating or alcohol use to cope
  • Avoidance of medical care
  • Increased risk of depression and anxiety

Stigma doesn’t motivate change — it damages health and wellbeing.

Body image, masculinity, and mental health

Many men feel caught between competing ideals: being lean and muscular. Media and social pressure reinforce unrealistic body standards that affect confidence, mood, and relationships.

This can lead to overtraining, crash dieting, or disordered eating patterns. Some men also internalise negative messages, blaming themselves for their weight — which only worsens stress and body dissatisfaction.

Support that acknowledges these pressures — and focuses on health, not appearance — can help restore balance and confidence.

Breaking the cycle

Real change starts with respect. Weight stigma is a public health issue, not a personal flaw.

At Yazen, we take a doctor-led, whole-person approach that addresses both the physical and psychological sides of weight. Our plans combine:

  • Medical care and hormone assessment

  • Nutrition, movement, and sleep support

  • Coaching to rebuild confidence and healthy habits

You’re not alone — and you don’t have to face stigma alone.

This is how you can start today
