Wegovy for weight loss – what is it and how does It work?

Wegovy is an approved weight loss medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide and is used as a medical treatment for overweight and obesity. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and belongs to a class of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. Unlike older medications that focused solely on blocking fat absorption in the intestine, Wegovy addresses the underlying biological causes of overeating by influencing the brain's reward and appetite systems while increasing feelings of fullness.

Many people are also familiar with its sister medication, Ozempic, which contains the same active ingredient. The difference lies in their approved uses and dosage levels. Wegovy is specifically developed and approved for the treatment of overweight and obesity using higher doses, while Ozempic is primarily prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

Wegovy is administered as a weekly injection into the fatty tissue of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm using a pre-filled injection pen. Treatment always begins with a low starting dose, typically 0.25 mg per week, allowing the body to adapt to the new hormonal balance while reducing the risk of side effects.

The dose is then gradually increased in consultation with a physician until the optimal dose is reached, up to a maximum of 2.4 mg. If reduced hunger and healthy weight loss are achieved with a lower dose (for example, 0.5 mg or 1.0 mg), there is no medical reason to increase the dose unnecessarily, which also helps minimise side effects.

Clinical studies show that patients lose, on average, 15–17% of their initial body weight after 68 weeks of continuous treatment with Wegovy. The extensive STEP clinical programme, which formed the basis for the medication's approval, demonstrated that semaglutide at a dose of 2.4 mg produces clinically meaningful weight loss for the majority of patients. In these studies, Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of approximately 15–17% after 68 weeks of continuous treatment.

Individual results vary depending on factors such as genetics, starting weight, age, and response to treatment. The medication provides biological support by reducing hunger, but long-term fat loss depends on using this appetite suppression to establish healthier eating habits and regular physical activity. Weight loss also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other obesity-related complications.

The most common side effects of Wegovy are temporary gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation. These symptoms occur because the medication slows stomach emptying and are most common at the beginning of treatment or following a dose increase.

For most patients, these side effects are mild and improve as the body adapts to the medication. Symptoms can often be reduced by eating smaller meals, chewing food thoroughly, avoiding fatty foods, and drinking plenty of water. More serious side effects, including gallstones and acute pancreatitis, are very rare. Some patients experience a slight increase in resting heart rate, but clinical research shows that Wegovy overall reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events. Patients should always inform their physician about impaired liver or kidney function or any other medical conditions to ensure treatment remains safe.
